Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Advanced Dental Technology and Materials

Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Advanced Dental Technology and Materials was approved to be established by Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality (STCSM) in 2018 and passed the acceptance check in January 2021. Director of the Center is Professor Jiang Xinquan. Director of the Technical Committee of the Center is Zhang Zhiyuan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Supported by Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the Center seeks to cure common and frequently-occurring oral and maxillofacial diseases, and thus focuses on oral new biomaterials, stem cells and tissue engineering technology, oral and maxillofacial personalized repair technology, dedicating itself to relevant study on the regeneration and functional repair of soft and hard tissue defects in the oral and maxillofacial region. Taking advantage of National "Double First-Class" Disciplines, National Key Disciplines, National Key Clinical Specialties, National Center for Stomatology and National Clinical Research Center for Oral Disease, the Center continues to promote the clinical promotion and application of advanced oral medicine technologies and biomaterials products with independent intellectual property rights, and completes prospective, multi-center clinical research on "Osteobone" bone repair materials and OSSEOSPEEDTMTX dental implants; takes the lead in introducing the enriched bone marrow stem cell technology into the repair of large jaw defects in the maxillofacial region; conducts multi-center clinical trial study of BMP-2-loaded bioactive materials for the repair of maxillofacial bone defects. The Center actively promotes international cooperation and exchanges, and cooperates with internationally renowned institutions such as Tufts University in the United States, University of Sydney in Australia, School of Dentistry of Radboud University in the Netherlands, Tohoku University in Japan, and the University of Hong Kong in project application, article publication, and mutual visits between teachers and students as well as in other aspects, and actively expand China's international influence in the field of  stomatology. The Center has gathered professionals of multiple disciplines such as oral clinical medicine, materials science, stem cell technology, and digital medicine, and has established a high-level scientific research team including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, distinguished professors of Yangtze River scholars of the Ministry of Education, and national “Ten Thousand Talents Program” scholars. It is in charge of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Innovative Research Groups, National Key Research and Development Program of China, National Natural Science Foundation of China Key International (Regional) Cooperative Research and other projects, as well as the "13th Five-Year" national key research and development plan, the national major scientific research plan "973" program, etc.

Shanghai Biomedical Material Testing Professional Technical Service Platform

The Shanghai Biomedical Material Testing Professional Technical Service Platform is one of the earliest institutions in China to participate in and establish the research and evaluation of the biological properties of oral materials and biomaterials. Over the past 40 years, the center has carried out leading domestic and international research on the development of new oral and biological materials, the interaction between materials and the body and their mechanisms, the formulation and revision of the national and industry standards, and the research on the biosafety evaluation of materials. The platform has completed more than 70 scientific research projects and won more than 10 scientific and technological achievement awards. In recent years, the center has undertaken projects such as the national "863" project, the key R&D program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health, Shanghai, under the leadership of Professor Sun Jiao, who is a leading talent in Shanghai and director of the center. The center has got 9 national invention patents, drafted 5 industry standards, and published more than 100 academic papers, including 58 SCI papers (the highest impact factor for a single paper is 13.942). At present, the center is the major unit of the Oral Materials Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association, the Biomaterials Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, the Biomaterials Biological Evaluation Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomaterials, and the Marine Biomaterials Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomaterials. The center has Chairman of the Mechanical Contraceptives, member of the National Standardization Technical Committee for Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices and Dental materials and instruments equipment, and editor-in-chief of the China Science and Technology Core Journal" Chinese Journal of Dental Materials and Devices.

Service Platform of Shanghai Temporomandibular Joint Disease and Maxillofacial Deformity Diagnosis and Treatment Professional Technique

The platform was established by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality in 2014. The Ninth People's Hospital Affiliated to is the supporting unit, and Professor Yang Chi of Oral Surgery is in charge of the general project. The platform is based in Shanghai, faces the Yangtze River Delta, benefits the whole of China, and influences the entire world. The center has established a comprehensive service platform integrating medicine, industry, and trade, including diagnosis and treatment concepts, technological innovations, product development and industrialization, education and training, and network information services, in response to the needs for the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint disease and related dental and maxillofacial deformities. Taking this platform as the core of innovation, the center provides not only research and development projects for many scientific research institutes, such as Jiaotong University, Fudan University, Shanghai Academy of Biological Sciences, and so forth, in the upstream of the industrial chain, but also product design and technical support for more than 10 production enterprises in the middle reaches. More than 70 downstream domestic and overseas hospitals provide new concepts, new technologies, and new equipment to benefit the public further.

The platform integrates multidisciplinary resources to form a new concept of joint diagnosis and treatment, and carries out technology and product innovation around this concept, including the internationally renowned innovative technology of minimally invasive surgery of the temporomandibular joint and the first personalized artificial joint products. The core equipment innovation of the platform has completed the transformation of patents related to temporomandibular arthroscopic disk reduction, obtained a registration certificate, and signed a transfer contract of 6 million yuan; a number of patents, such as tent nails, have been converted into 1.8 million yuan. The platform continued to convert the remaining patents in 2020, with the target conversion amount exceeding 10 million. Relevant technical achievements have won the first prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award in 2019. The platform led to the formulation of "Matching artificial temporomandibular joint group standard," which was the first national standard for a temporomandibular joint prosthesis. At the same time, the platform obtained more than 10 national-, provincial-, and ministerial-level funding in the last 3 years, with a total funding amount exceeding 10 million. It has led two municipal clinical multi-center prospective studies and multiple innovative product multi-center clinical trials and laid the foundation for solving clinical problems and promoting product translation. The platform also has a number of branch research platforms, including a dental pulp stem cell translation studio and two large tissue sample banks, which provide hardware support for joint bioprinting, dental stem cell translation research, and proteomics research and assist in the realization of scientific research translation goals. The platform cooperates with the construction of the network platform and integrates the functions of innovative treatment concept dissemination, technical training, product promotion, and remote consultation. It has effectively promoted the optimization of the medical industry chain, formed a sustainable development model, and realized the platform service goals.

Service platform of Shanghai Oral and Maxillofacial Tumor Tissue Samples and Biological Information Database Professional Technique

The Service Platform of Shanghai Oral and Maxillofacial Tumor Tissue Samples and Biological Information Database Professional Technique was established in 2014 after being approved by experts in the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission based on a number of R&D platform projects funded by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission. The director of the platform is Professor Chen Wantao. The platform is based on the Oral and MaxillofacialHead and Neck Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Center of the Ninth People's Hospital Affiliated to , the National Medical Research Center for Oral Diseases, and the Shanghai Institute of Stomatology. Based on the abundant patient tissue sample resources and strong research foundation, this platform is under the leadership and guidance of the former academician Qiu Weiliu and the current academician Zhang Zhiyuan. Using advanced omics, systemic biology, and new technologies and methods such as bioinformatics, it applies the Big Data integration network as the carrier and focuses on the development and application of multiple sets of bioinformatics data such as genetics/epigenetics corresponding to tissue bank specimens. This platform has successfully established a high-content scientific research service for oral cancer with oral and maxillofacial tumor tissue samples, derivatives, and genetic and epigenetic multi-group biological information data as the main body at home and abroad.


The platform has more than 1000 m2 of experimental sites and tissue specimen storage sites, and has established a complete quality management standard operating procedure for tissue sample collection, storage, and application. By 2019, more than 13,200 tissue samples from patients with oral tumors were deposited. At the same time, it took the lead in using high-throughput gene detection technology, molecular biology technology, and bioinformatics analysis software to draw the characteristic multi-omics molecular map related to the occurrence and development of oral cancer in the Chinese population in multiple dimensions. The data provided by the platform includes eight types of Chinese oral cancer–related data, including gene expression profile, gene mutation profile, and miRNA expression profile, which are shared on the website of the tissue bank. The platform also provides a series of oral cancer–related genes and candidate molecular targets for diagnosis and treatment. It has established an intelligent database for the clinical and molecular classification and diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial tumors.

Services platform of Technology Development and Application for Shanghai Oral-Craniomaxillofacial Digitization

The Services Platform of Technology Development and Application for Shanghai Oral-Craniomaxillofacial Digitization, funded by a number of projects from the National Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality (STCSM) and the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, was established by STCSM in 2021. Professor Xudong Wang services as the director of the Services Platform. Under the leadership and guidance of the former academic leader academician Weiliu Qiu and the current academic leader academician Zhizhi Zhang, through integrating the resource advantages of stomatology in Ninth People's Hospital of , and digital medicine, etc., a high-quality oral-cranio-maxillofacial digital technology research and application service platform has been established, relying on the Department of Oral Cranio-Maxillofacial of Ninth People's Hospital of , the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases and Shanghai Institute of Stomatology, and based on the abundant patients with oral and cranio-maxillofacial related diseases from the Platform, disease-specific database, and the digital diagnosis and treatment technology with strong discipline and research foundation support. The platform is established for the development of digital oral medicine software, the design and development of implantable medical devices, the research and development of high-precision craniofacial surgery navigation systems, augmented reality and surgical robot technology, to meet the growing oral health requirement of the people and contribute to a healthy China.


The platform includes four major parts: the development of digital softwares, design and development of new materials and medical devices, clinical applications and clinical trials, and technology transformation. The platform possesses more than 200 patents of various types, drafts 4 group standards, and has completed and archived more than 10,000 digital surgical solutions for patients with oral-cranio-maxillofacial deformities (an average of more than 1,000 cases per year), covering the digital diagnosis and treatment process of various common and rare cases of oral craniomaxillofacial deformities. The platform will target domestic and foreign scientific research institutes, digital medicine-related enterprises, medical service institutions and specialist physicians. Based on the new technology of digital oral diagnosis and treatment, the platform will provide technology development and verification services, quality supervision and product upgrade services, and digital technology support services for clinical diagnosis and treatment, ultimately to benefit the patients.

Shanghai professional technical service platform for the mechanical behavior and design of interactive interface of medical artificial substitutes

Shanghai professional technical service platform for the mechanical behavior and design of interactive interface of medical artificial substitutes was approved by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of science and technology in 2022. This platform is supported by Renji Hospital Affiliated to Medical College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the project director is Dr. Eryi Lu of the academic centre of dental medicine.


Based on the clinical needs for medical artificial substitutes and the potential research value of biomechanics on medical artificial substitutes, the platform provides one-stop services including computer simulation, biological model guidance and construction, and the multi-dimensional analysis, design, inspection and evaluation for the substitute material mechanics and body side biomechanics of the implanted substitute interface. Besides, the digital and visual guidance through the weight analysis can also be provided.


Using the self-raised and department-supported large-scale equipment and instruments for material mechanics evaluation and biological researches, the platform been able to provide services such as finite element model, animal model establishment, and biomachanical detection and evaluation for the interface and surrounding tissues of the implanted substitutes. The platform can not only provide R & D projects for scientific research institutes such as Jiao Tong University, Fudan University and Chinese Academy of Sciences, but also provide product design and technical support for manufacturers.
