上海市第一人民医院始建于1864年，史称“公济医院”，英文名Shanghai General Hospital，为当时国内规模最大的西医医院，也是全国建院最早的西医综合性医院之一。医院“一院两址”，分设虹口和松江两部，同时全面接管嘉定江桥医院。新冠疫情期间，派员任全国第一支援鄂医疗队领队和专家组组长,涌现出全国优秀共产党员、全国劳模等一大批先进典型，受到党和国家以及上海市领导的充分肯定。获第六届“全国文明单位”和“全国红十字模范单位”荣誉称号。国家三级公立医院绩效考核获A++最高考评等级，在全国2413家三级公立医院中位列综合医院类第12名，上海第3名。
医院现设北部（虹口区武进路85/86号）南部（松江区新松江路650号），共占地约29.5万㎡。2021年医院有职工4594人，核定床位1820张，南北两部临床一级学科和医技学科共48个。2021年医院收治门急诊患者453.8万人次；出院人数13.3万；手术人次10.7万。医疗服务结构转型下质量与效率保持高水准、稳增长。
医院成立上海首家高标准临床研究院，打造创新联合体，获批建设转化医学国家科学中心（上海）市一分中心。积极开展医疗人工智能、分子影像、生物材料、细胞、微创等多方面的科研合作。近几年，获国家科技部重点研发计划等重大研究项目、国家自然科学基金项目数突飞猛进，发表一大批以Science、JAMA等为代表的高水平论文。医院2021年获国家自然科学基金92项，国家重点研发计划5项，国家科技进步奖二等奖1项，上海市科技进步奖一等奖1项等众多奖项。医院现有住院医师规范化培训国家基地20个；专科医师规范化培训国家基地3个，上海市基地24个。现有博导92名，硕导129名，博士点27个，博士后流动站27个，硕士点37个。代表中国参加世界医学教育联合会评定，高质量通过评审，获得国际认可，被评为国家级临床教学培训示范中心（培育）单位。
