Being an essential component of modern medicine, medical technology became in 2011 the first-level discipline under the category of medicine and is an important pathway for clinician to access to patient’s information and to implement therapy, serving the patient directly or indirectly through provision of medical technologies including diagnosis, treatment, nutrition, rehabilitation service, etc. With every progress made in medical technology having brought about the soaring development of modern medicine, medical technology has become today an important tool and key driver for human being to explore into the unknown areas of medical and life sciences. Medical technology not only affords assurance in the sense of engineering technology and methods for innovative development of those disciplines such as clinic, pharmacy, etc., but also is a vital bridging discipline, bridging not only the interactions between basic and clinical medicine, and biomedical engineering and medicine, but also the achievement commercialization between higher-learning institutions and medical businesses.  

Founding of the College of Health Science and Technology marks a new milestone on SJTU School of Medicine’s way to a world-class medical college! On the strength of disciplinary advantages of science and engineering and clinical medicine of SJTU the comprehensive university, the College of Health Science and Technology has, through its efforts of interdisciplinary fusion and innovation-driven development, been tempered into a first-level discipline in medical technology field comprised of second-level disciplines including medical examination technology, medical experiment technology, medical imaging technology, clinical nutrition discipline, and hearing and speech rehabilitation, etc.

Thanks to characteristic and balanced development of all the disciplines, as well as a series of innovative results achieved especially in the field of diagnosis and treatment of hemophilia, tumor immunity basics and treatment, clinical molecular imaging, food and nutrition, hearing and speech rehabilitation, etc, the College of Health Science and Technology has garnered fair academic influence both domestic and abroad. In October, 2021, the College of Health Science and Technology was approved by China’s Ministry of Education as awarding unit of doctorate degrees for first-level disciplines of medical technologies.

On the basis of establishing the disciplines including medical examination technology, food and nutrition, medical imaging technology, hearing and speech rehabilitation, etc., and taking the opportunity being recognized as awarding unit of doctorate degrees for first-level disciplines of medical technology, the College of Health Science and Technology will escalate the interdisciplinary fusion and innovation-driven development, and implement bachelor-master-doctor run-through education  aligning with the industry needs, in an attempt to deliver a galaxy of high-caliber and inter-disciplinary talents of medical technology, as well as to provide assurance of discipline construction and talent cultivation for “new discipline” -led innovative development of medical technology.
