Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is among the first batch of medical colleges and universities in China that establish medical laboratory discipline for undergraduates, and its medical laboratory discipline enjoys a good reputation in related fields in domestic China, and is a characteristic discipline as recognized by the Ministry of Education. Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was accredited respectively in 1986 and in 1998 as awarding unit of master and doctor degree for clinical and diagnostics and laboratory. The SJTUSM pursues the teaching philosophy integrating knowledge imparting with ability cultivation, laying eyes on cultivating the students’ creativity and practical abilities; and meanwhile attaches importance to teaching reforms, as well as to the combination between theory and practice and between tradition and modernity. The SJTUSM is proud of unique school-business cooperation mode, and with it, the discipline education and career planning of the students are ingeniously woven into the whole teaching course. The SJTUSM is of high-ranking among its domestic peers in terms of provision of professional curriculum and compilation of professional teaching materials.

Starting from the year 2021, in SJTUSM’s cooperation initiative with the Sino-French Joint Medical College, in association with first-rate medical colleges and universities of France, the medical laboratory -oriented French language discipline under the Sino-French “4+1” undergraduate - postgraduate run-through education program is newly added to the discipline matrix of medical laboratory technology. With a promising employment prospect, the graduates can seek employment in hospitals of all levels (clinical laboratory, etc.), scientific research institutes, medical institutions of all levels, large-size medicine-related business, etc., or alternatively, choose further study (those qualified can move on to postgraduate study, save from examination process).
