In 2004, SJTUSM became the first in China in establishing nutriology discipline (renamed in 2012 as food hygiene and nutriology discipline) to be conferred of degree of Bachelor of Science upon successful completion of the learning program, which was approved in 2017 as Shanghai’s pilot project for application-oriented university discipline. On the strength of the first-rate medical education resources of the SJTUSM, establishment of the food hygiene and nutriology discipline purposes for a cultivation system of top-notch interdisciplinary talents with clinical nutrition expertise and the “nutriology+” multidisciplinary education background, and aims at cultivating outstanding nutrition talents who are provided with basic knowledge and skills of medicine, nutriology and food safety and are familiar with nutrition care and nutritional dietary guidance, and with world vision and multi-discipline background, continuously contributing to SJTUSM a pioneer in the construction and development of cultivation system of China’s nutrition talents.
In the aspect of scientific research, this discipline has conducted exchange and cooperation to broad extent with relative disciplines of first-rate colleges and universities at home and abroad, gearing to the national’s strategic needs and the leading edge of discipline development. The discipline is provided with strong force in research directions such as diet and health, nutritional support of premature infant and early life nutrition, and has grown into a seasoned and well-structured academic team with brilliantly emerging array of young and middle-aged research people, in which the SJTUSM Nutrition Department serves as the backbone while the clinical nutrition sections of the affiliated hospitals as the supplement.
