Hearing and speech rehabilitation discipline is an emerging cross subject combining medicine, science, engineering and social science, is made entry into the undergraduate enrollment catalog of China’s regular higher education institutions only in 2012 (discipline code: 101008T). In recent two decades, parallel with expanding coverage of hearing screening for China’s newborn babies and with fast-growing disciplines in relative fields, especially the technological advancement in the field of artificial hearing reconstruction (implanting of listening aid, cochlear implant system and artificial brainstem) and intelligent hearing, hearing and speech rehabilitation science has been extending from the “clinical audiology” into “clinic, basic, rehabilitation, education, industrial making, and industrialization”, “speech rehabilitation” and “preventive assessment and rehabilitation treatment of disease as of vestibule”, and has achieved crossed fusion with multiple disciplines. 

At present, SJTUSM is possessing an efficient and high-caliber talents team of 40 odd people ascending into the world rank and charting the development of the domestic hearing and speech rehabilitation discipline. They vow to cultivate in China a group of academic leaders in the field of hearing and speech rehabilitation, a group of outstanding teachers and celebrated educators who address themselves to education of hearing and speech rehabilitation science, and even a group of global pacesetters in certain areas of the discipline. This would help the China’s hearing and speech rehabilitation keep up with the world’s pace.
