The year 2022 marks the 70th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, as well as the 115th anniversary of the Ruijin Hospital. Concurrently, the very moment ushers in the first term graduate of the College of Health Science and Technology, SJTU School of Medicine since its founding.
Among the attendants of the graduation ceremony include leaders as Ning Guang, director of Ruijin Hospital and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Hu Yiqun, vice dean of SJTU School of Medicine and dean of the College of Health Science and Technology, Yuan Qing, party secretary of the College of Health Science and Technology and member of CPC Committee of Ruijin Hospital, etc., as well as representatives of teachers from all the disciplines of the College.
The graduation ceremony was unveiled by recalling of pieces of the four-year university life, and was attended on/off the “Cloud” side by faculty and all the graduates of the College.
Wang Jiang and Jiang Shuo, the graduate representatives, and Ms Shen Yuhong the parent’s representative took to the podium in succession, extending their heartfelt thanks and blessings to the faculty for their professionalism, while Xu Zhizhen, teacher representative delivered his cordial words to the graduates.
Wang Xuefeng, vice dean of the College and head of the Medical Laboratory Technology Department, and Xu Qinyi, executive vice-dean of the College awarded graduation certificates to the student representative, which symbolize the students’ successful completion of the education program, and their taking on a journey denoting “haboring the belief, to bound for a bright future”.
“Around the Magnolia Garden, brilliant array of talents sprout; by the magnolia trees, book-flipping sound heard; and under the Magnolia insignia, bunch of fruits reaped”, the triplet poem composed by Luo Xinyue with Medical Laboratory Technology Dept, was affectionately expressed via calligraphy by Pan Zhengcan of the same department, interpreting to the best the course and feeling of all the graduates over their university life. The poem is donated to the College in form of calligraphic work.
Yuan Qing, party secretary of the College officially released the Logo of the College. The Rod of Asclepius dominates at the center of the Logo, with pair of wings on the both sides of Rod of Asclepius symbolizing the soaring medical technologies, the magnolia petals around the Rod of Ascelpius embodying the broad and inclusive regional culture of the College’s location, the dome boding for a promising development of the College under the management of the over-100-year Ruijin Hospital, and the DNA and gear standing for the College’s characteristics and paragon of crossed medicine and engineering, denoting its development philosophy “Precision Medicine, Technology Prevails”. The party secretary presented T-shirt to the graduates as return souvenir.
Hu Yiqun, dean of the College was very much affirmative of the graduates’ achievements made during the four years of the university life, and meanwhile raised his expectations over the graduates: “Be a lofty and broad-minded man, setting eyes afar and higher, and be a seed sowed on China’s holy land; Be always practical and truth-seeking, and be excelsior, hardworking and down-to-earth; Be creative-minded, always self-exceeding, and authority-defying, and be a dream-chaser; be responsible and ambitious, living up to the mission calls of this era”. Dean Hu concluded his words with a line of lyrics “(giant wood) My debut, little known and shy, is only cheered by people when I pierce into cloud and sky”. He expressed his hope that the graduates should map their splendid career under the backdrop of this grand era, living up to the historical mission vested on them, with it, they would be surely rewarded with great honor as young man.
In his speech, academician Ni Guang didn’t evade from the fact of “unusual situation” this term graduates had experienced: 3 year-lasting Covid-19 pandemics, the on-line teaching as the only option, as well as the gamut from incubation to formal establishment of the College. However, as he emphasized, the value and indispensableness of medical technology was even spotlighted by such “unusualness”. Carrying forward his words, academician Ning cited the “Three Life Zeniths”: the first is to “Cultivate One’s Virtue”, the second is to “Seek One’s Merits”, and the third is to “Prevail One’s Ethical Code”. Lastly, academician Ning expressed his expectations over the graduates: Be a man of eminent goodness, be self-critical and self-disciplined, be ethical in medical practicing, and be a morality educator.
Academician Ning Guang and dean Hu Yiqun jointly started up the simulated “Bound for Bright Future” express train, expressing hope that the graduates could honor the medical destination and aspiration being “Broad and profound, diligent and excelsior”, living up their historical responsibility “People First and Life Foremost”, and be always ready to become a pioneer of the medical circle.
The graduation ceremony fell curtain in the wake of climax of beautiful melody “Closing Music: Farewell to My University”, with the blessing “Happy Graduation”, “Graduation is the end, and is a new start as well” pervading throughout the ceremony venue.
