Teaching Department of Oral Surgery
The Teaching Department of Oral Surgery consists of three parts: outpatient clinic, outpatient operating room, and surgery ward, which is characterized by sub-disciplines including temporomandibular joint (TMJ), maxillofacial nerve diseases, oral and maxillofacial infection, non-neoplastic salivary gland diseases, integrated alveolar surgery, basic medical laboratory study, and etc.
At present, there are 28 faculty and staff members in the department, including 9 professors, 6 associate professors, and 14 young teaching staff members.
The main research interests are:
1. Mastering of professional knowledge: the diagnostic strategy and treatment principle of alveolar diseases, TMJ diseases, salivary gland diseases, oral and maxillofacial inflammation, trauma and nerve diseases in oral surgery.
2.Training of clinical skills: systematically master the clinical diagnosis and treatment process of oral surgery; familiar with local anesthesia, tooth extraction, suturing and other basic skills.
3. Cultivation of humanities quality: integration of ideological and political elements, cultivate staff members with moral education, and cultivate students' altruistic professional quality with benevolence and skill and patient-centered principles.

Teaching Department of Oromaxillofacial Head and Neck Oncology
Founded in 1932, and originally as Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology, was a major branch of the former Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In 2016, the Teaching Department of Oromaxillofacial Head and Neck Oncology incorporated several related disciplines and formed into a new comprehensive department, which included seven subdisciplines: oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oromaxillofacial head and neck radiotherapy, oral and maxillofacial chemo/immunotherapy, oral and maxillofacial laser/thermotherapy, oral and maxillofacial basic medicine. The doctoral programs were honorably accredited in all the subdisciplines with 2 Members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In addition, the department was granted among the first group of National Clinical Key Disciplines by the Ministry of Education. The department is also the international fellowship educational bases for International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS), The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSE) and the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO/ASIF).
At present, there are 80 faculty and staff members in the department, including 2 Members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering,19 professors/consultants, and 22 associate professors.
Oral and maxillofacial oncology is an important part of the integrated curriculum system of stomatology, mainly including the systematic knowledge of the epidemiology, etiology, clinical radiologic, pathologic diagnosis and multi-disciplinary treatment modalities for oral and maxillofacial tumors. At the same time, great efforts are made to cultivate students' basic clinical techniques and clinicopathologic thinking patterns. The basic techniques were enhanced via practice and clinical examinations. Much attention is paid to the standardized treatment, diagnosis, flexible application of clinical techniques in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of maxillofacial diseases, so as to lay a solid foundation for students to learn relevant courses, for the sake of future clinical internship and practice.

Teaching Department of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery
Founded in 2011, the Teaching Department of Oral & Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery is a national key discipline which includes four sub-disciplines: dental facial deformities, cranio-maxillofacial orthodontics, cleft lip and palate, oral and cranio-maxillofacial trauma, and sleep apnea syndromes. The department belongs to faculty of oral and maxillofacial surgery which is the unit of national-level courses construction, national key clinical specialty, key discipline of Shanghai, Shanghai Clinical Stomatology Center, and has become one of the key disciplines of "211 Project" for 3 consecutive batches, and has won the National May 1st Labor Certificate, the title of Pioneer of National Workers and the National Youth Model Unit Award.
There are 116 medical staff in the department, including 12 staff with senior professional title and 11 with deputy senior professional title. There are 7 doctoral supervisors and 8 master supervisors. A number of talent training programs have been obtained such as Shanghai Outstanding Medical Academic Leader Program, Outstanding Discipline Leader, etc.
As an important part of the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases (Shanghai) and the only branch center of the World Cranio-Maxillofacial Foundation (WCF), the department has multiple research and treatment centers focusing on joint orthognathic and orthodontic treatment for dentomaxillofacial deformities, team approach for cleft lip and palate, multidisciplinary treatment for cranio-maxillofacial trauma, comprehensive sequential therapy for sleep disorders. The department has been approved to build the Practice and Training Base of Innovative Talents in Oral and Cranial-Maxillofacial Digital Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Pediatric Cranio-Maxillofacial Deformities Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Research and Practice Base for R & D and Transformation of New Medical Devices Related to Oral & Cranio-Maxillofacial Malformations, and the "Youth Science and Technology Innovation Studio" of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

Prosthodontics
Department of Prosthodontics was founded in 1984. His former was Department of Oral Orthopedic of Shanghai Second Medical College, which was founded in 1956. The first department director was Professor Qiu Lichong, a famous educator of Stomatology. In 1984, the Department of Oral Orthopedic was divided into two departments: Prosthodontics and Orthodontics. The directors of the Department of Prosthodontics successively were: Qiu Lichong, Yang Chongying, Zhang Fuqiang and Jiang Xinquan.
The Teaching Department of Prosthodontics is one of the national prosthodontics teaching centers. It also works as doctor and master degree awarding institution and has Post-Doctor Program in stomatology. The department undertakes the editorial committee of many national unified textbooks including: Prosthodontics, Stomatology, Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Partial Denture, Complete Denture, etc. Some faculties are responsible for the associated editors of these publications. In 2010, the course of Prosthodontics responsible by the department was selected as a Top-quality course of Shanghai. In 2021, the new integrated course of Prosthodontics was selected as a municipal key course in Shanghai. In the same year, the Virtual Faculty of the Ministry of Education's Stomatology Curriculum responsible by Professor Jiang Xinquan was selected into the first group of Projects of Virtual Faculty of the Ministry. In 2018, the project of Shanghai Stomatology Advanced Technology and Materials Engineering Technology Research Center responsible by Professor Jiang Xinquan was approved by Shanghai Science and Technology Commission.
The department has 37 faculty members and 89% of them have post graduate degree. 17 members have senior professional title, one with professor title, one with associated professor title, 5 Doctoral supervisors and 5 Master supervisors. One faculty number is awarded with National Distinguished Youth, one with National Outstanding Youth, one with Special Prize for Excellent Teachers of Baosteel Education Award, one with Teaching and Education Award of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Notably one member has been inaugurated as the present chairman of International Society of Prosthodontics (ICP) and the fellow of International College of dentists (ICD).
The department has dedicated elaborated studies in the field of repair and regeneration of oral and maxillofacial tissues, digitalization of prosthodontics, development of new materials for prosthodontics, biomechanics research, implant prothesis and mechanisms and treatment of temporomandibular joint disease. The study results achieved leading position and obtained acceptance in national wide. In recent years, the study results have won one first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of the Ministry of Education, two first prizes and one second prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of Shanghai.

Teaching Department of Endodontics
In 1955, the discipline of Dentistry was established in the Faculty of Stomatology Shanghai Second Medical College, where Endodontics was one of the main courses in the discipline. Since the 1950s, the Department of Stomatology has been responsible for teaching undergraduate students, and in the 1990s, according to the requirements of the dental education reform, Endodontics officially became an independent discipline. In 2010, it became the first batch of National Key Clinical Specialties and Shanghai Key (Characteristic) Disciplines and is an important part of the National Center of Stomatology, as well as an important part of the Virtual Faculty of the Ministry of Education's Stomatology Curriculum. It undertakes key teaching reform projects and a number of teaching topics for undergraduates in Shanghai municipal universities.
The teaching team consists of 38 professionals, including 3 doctoral supervisors and 3 master's supervisors; 9 have acquired senior titles, 17 have PhD degrees and 21 have master's degrees.
In order to respond to the new organ-based medical education model, the department has been building a multidisciplinary teaching team and teaching model since 2012, integrating the contents of courses such as Endodontology, Oral Biology, Oral Clinical Pharmacology, Oral and Maxillofacial Medical Imaging Diagnosis, Oral Histopathology and Oral Preventive Medicine, etc. Since 2017, the department established a dental simulated practice teaching team and a dental virtual simulation teaching team. Both teams have combined online teaching, PBL, CBL, clinical case discussion, dental operation skills training, as well as pre-clinical practical training and hand training with traditional classroom lectures to establish a comprehensive and integrated teaching curriculum in order to lay a solid foundation for future clinical work.

Teaching Department of Periodontology
Founded in April 2012, the Teaching Department of Periodontology was formerly known as the Periodontology Professional Teaching Group of the Department of Oral Medicine, and now is a key discipline in Shanghai. As the department is identified as the national key clinical specialty, the periodontology course is also a key course construction project of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and an excellent course of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Clinically, it features multidisciplinary joint diagnosis and treatment such as sequential treatment of moderate and severe periodontitis. The teaching department participated in the compilation of the Ministry of Health planning textbook Periodontology and the postgraduate textbook Periodontology. The department also undertakes teaching tasks for undergraduates, 5-year and 8-year undergraduates, master's and doctoral students.
At present, there are 19 faculty and staff members in the department, including 2 doctoral supervisor.
The research areas in the department are primarily as follows: periodontal regeneration, association between periodontitis and systemic diseases and etiology of periodontitis. In recent years, it held more than 20 projects, including national-level scientific research projects, provincial and ministerial-level scientific research projects, and published more than 100 papers. The main goals are educating dental students with good communication skills, and postgraduate students with good clinical competency and scientific research ability.

Teaching Department of Oral Medicine
Formerly known as the Periodontal Mucosal Disease Clinical Group of the Department of Oral Medicine in 1955, the discipline of Oral Mucosal Diseases was established in 1958, which is one of the earliest units focusing on the research and treatment of oral mucosal diseases. In 2001, it became a specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai, and in 2005, it became a key medical discipline of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau. In 2008, as the only oral project, it was selected as a key special disease construction project (oral leukoplakia) in the "Eleventh Five-Year" of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2012, it was selected as a key specialty construction project of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan", and established a specialty of oral mucosal disease of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine. In 2013, it was selected as a national key clinical specialty construction project, and it is the only national-level “dual key” discipline among similar disciplines in China. In 2017, it was selected as an emerging interdisciplinary construction project of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai - the discipline of oral mucosal disease of traditional Chinese medicine.
The teaching department has 18 specialists and 3 specialist nurses, 50% have senior professional titles, 67% have doctoral degrees, and 50% have overseas training experience.
The department has been committed to the research on the diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal diseases with integrated traditional Chinese and western Medicine. The research interests include oral leukoplakia, oral lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus and other potential malignant disorders of oral mucosa, concurrent mucocutaneous diseases, difficult diseases such as syndromes involving oral mucosa, the relationship between oral mucosal diseases and systemic diseases, physical therapy and drug development for oral mucosal diseases.

Teaching Department of Orthodontics
Originated in the 1960s (one of the pioneers in the orthodontic discipline in mainland China), and established independently in 1984, the Teaching Department of Orthodontics has developed into a leading department with high domestic and international reputation. It is National Key Clinical Specialty, National Standardized Specialist Training Base and key unit of Shanghai Orthodontist Specialty Training Base. There are programs for undergraduate, MDS and PhD. Orthodontic examination and training center for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (overseas) were authorized. The Laboratory of Oral Mechanics & Biology was established in 2019.
At present, there are 72 faculty and staff members in the department, including 5 professors, 17 associate professors (2 PhD supervisors, 7 MDS supervisors) and 1 full-time scientific researcher.
Research areas are the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of malocclusion, and biomechanical mechanism of orthodontic treatment. The sub-disciplines include Perio-Orthodontics, TMJ-Orthodontics, Surgery-Orthodontics, Digital Orthodontics, Early-Orthodontic Treatment, Orthodontics for Cleft Lip and Palate, etc. The scientific research interests involve craniofacial growth and development, biomaterials, biomechanics and cell biology, etc. More than 10 teachers were supported by varies national and Shanghai municipal foundation, such as Shanghai Science and Technology Development Fund. More than 14 projects including key projects were supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China. The department is committed to cultivating the talents with clinical and research competency, who have an interdisciplinary vision and meets the international standards.

Founded in 2003, the Teaching Department of General Dentistry & Dental Emergency includes all sub-disciplines of clinical oral medicine. In 2003, the master degree program of Clinical Oral Medicine was accredited. In 2008, the Ph.D program of Clinical Oral Medicine was accredited. The teaching department offers the professional courses of “Oral Emergency Medicine” for students of College of Stomatology Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the course of “Stomatology” for students of Clinical Medicine in School of Medicine Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The teaching department also undertakes Oral Health part of the Unit II course of Ottawa – Shanghai Joint School of Medicine. Moreover, the department is a clinical teaching base of dental emergency, which provides strong support for undergraduates and residents to learn and improve their dental emergency skills.
At present, there are more than 50 faculty and staff members in the department, including 2 professors and 5 associate professors.
The research areas in the department are primarily as follows: studies on mechanisms of oral microorganisms and systemic diseases, oral stem cells and regeneration of soft and hard tissues, biomarkers related to lesions and oral precancerous diseases, dental development, oral antibacterial studies, etc. The department has placed great emphasis on competency training of both fundamental research and dental clinical practical application, cultivated high-level talents for basic dental research, clinical dental research, and management in the related fields, and achieved enormous accomplishments in Stomatology.

Teaching Department of Pediatric Dentistry
Established in 1984, the Teaching Department of Pediatric Dentistry, one of the earliest department of Pediatric Dentistry in China, consists of a stable team of teaching staff with a rational structure and good teaching quality. After an extended period, the department has achieved remarkable results in the teaching system, course content and layout, teaching methods, textbook construction, scientific research construction, etc., becoming the first-class department of Pediatric Dentistry domestically. In 2006, Pediatric Dentistry was awarded an excellent course at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The department presently undertakes Pediatric Dentistry's theoretical and laboratory courses and clinical practice for five-year undergraduates, eight-year doctoral students, and upgrade from junior college to university students. Moreover, it is the chairman designate unit of the Chinese Society of Pediatric Dentistry, the base of the standardized training for residents and specialists of Pediatric Dentistry in Shanghai. In 2019, the department won the group award of "Xing Yuan Rong Yuan" .
At present, there are almost 40 staff members in the department.
The research areas mainly focus on dental trauma, dental caries, tooth development and dental materials, etc. In addition, the department has greatly emphasized clinical research on the endodontic treatment of young permanent teeth, such as the effect of autologous platelet concentrates in regenerative endodontics and the prognosis of inflammatory vital pulp therapy. The department has conducted several projects sponsored by National Science Foundation of China and National Science Foundation of Shanghai, published a number of papers in related fields, cultivated high-level talents for pediatric dentistry and achieved enormous accomplishments in oral science.

Teaching Department of Basic Oral Science
Founded in 2012, the Teaching Department of Basic Oral Science includes seven teaching groups: oral histology and pathology, dental anatomy, oral pharmacology, oral physiology, dental materials, oral biology and oral immunology. Basic oral science is an indispensable, important course, and becomes a bridge between basic and clinical medicine. The primary goal of this course is to lay a foundation for further study of other basic and clinical dental courses.
At present, there are 27 faculty and staff members in the department, including 9 professors, 10 associate professors, 8 lecturers.
The research areas in the department are primarily as follows: Oral histology and pathology: oral and maxillofacial development; development of teeth, and the histology of dental tissues, including enamel, dentin, dental pulp and cementum.
Dental anatomy: establishing a new teaching idea, which has developed the traditional basic course of oral anatomy into a course with the characteristics of professional basic courses. Its core idea is to combine theory with practice, foundation with clinical practice, emphasizing the cultivation of practical ability, which is an innovative reform.
Oral pharmacology: drug dosage and prescription, design and evaluation of clinical trials, monitoring of adverse drug reactions and rational use of drugs. Oral physiology: occlusion physiological and pathological characteristics and occlusion function.
Dental materials: composite resins, pulp capping agents and guided tissue regeneration membrane, surface modification of dental implants, biological evaluation and standardization of medical devices.
Oral biology: functional characteristics of oral tissues and organs, physiological mechanisms, oral ecology and the etiology and pathogenesis of common oral diseases.
Oral immunology: Oral defense system, common oral diseases and immunity.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Implantology
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Implantology is one of the earliest departments of implant dentistry in China. The department strives for oral and peri-implant health of the Chinese population and beyond. The aim of the department is to provide professional undergraduate/postgraduate/research, education and training in Implant Dentistry. The faculty and staff members are highly committed to conduct basic, translational and clinical research for making new discoveries, inspiring innovative approaches in implant science to improve and refine prevention, diagnosis and treatment in clinical practice; to engage and collaborate with colleagues globally; and to excel in research through innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration in the region and around the world.
At present, there are 49 faculty and staff members in the Teaching Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Implantology, including 2 professors, 5 clinical assistant professor, 4 senior clinical practitioner, 1 Chairman of the Implantology Committee of the Chinese Stomatology Association, 1 Executive Director of European Research Group on Periodontology (ERGOPERIO) multicenter multinational clinical trial network.
The department is a research and training-oriented department. As the earliest department of implant dentistry in China with large numbers of representative papers published in the top international journals, the department holds a leading position in the implant field. The major research areas in the department are primarily as follows: implant material and surface modification; clinical procedures and biological rational in implant placement, wound healing and tissue regeneration;diagnosis, prevention and treatment of perio-and peri-implant diseases;impact of oral health on general health and its mechanism.
