Zygomatic implant technique has a history of more than 30 years on its clinical application, and was originally used on the reconstruction of patients with maxillectomy defects. In the treatment of edentulous patients with severely atrophic maxilla, zygomatic implant has its unique advantages. Firstly, zygomatic implant avoids complex bone grafting procedures and shortens the overall treatment time; secondly, this approach has the possibility to achieve immediate loading and restore the oral function of patients shortly after the surgery. However, zygomatic implant is accompanied with high technical sensitivity and serious complications, which requires the surgeon to have a solid knowledge of maxillofacial anatomy and surgical skills.

Since 2002, Prof. Wu Yiqun and his teamhas h ave been committed to the development of zygomatic implant technique, andhas h ave accumulated rich experience in particular placing the zygomatic implant under the guidance of computer-aided navigation system. The team has published more than 20 high-quality papers on this topic, making it an international leader in this field. The present group standard is the first expert consensus on zygomatic implant technique in China, which reviewed the history, development and evolution of the technique, and combined expert opinions on the basis of evidence. The indications, contraindications, preoperative assessment, treatment planning, surgical procedures, computer-assisted implantation, provisional and definite restoration, as well as complications related to zygomatic implant were summarized, aiming to provide a guidance for the standard development of zygomatic implant technique in China, obtain predictable therapeutic outcomes, and benefit more patients.
