China Engineering and Technology Forum on“Transformation Study of Oral Ecology and Major Chronic Diseases” Held in Shanghai
April 1, 2023

From March 30th to 31st, the China Engineering and Technology Forum on“Transformation Study of Oral Ecology and Major Chronic Diseases” was successfully held in Shanghai. The forum was organized by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and co-organized by the Division of Medicine and Health of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, College of Stomatology of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, National Key Laboratory Co-Founded by the Ministry ofScience and Technology and Provincial Government (preparatory), National Center for Stomatology, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Stomatology and Shanghai Research Institute of Stomatology. This forum focused on hot topics such as the impact of oral ecological changes on the etiology, progression and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, malignant diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Alzheimer's disease and other major chronic diseases. Six academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 12 outstanding experts from domestic colleges of Stomatology were invited to give keynote speeches. Gao Zhanjun, Director of the Department Three of the Chinese Academy of Engineering also attended the conference.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Guo Lian, Party Secretary of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and Dean of the College of Stomatology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Wang Chen, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a speech on behalf of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He pointed out that the oral cavity is an extremely important and pivotal human organ, closely connected with the outside world and other parts of the human body. Oral health interacts with and affects overall health, promoting the development of stomatology through multidisciplinary pathways and methods. With the high prevalence, oral diseases have become a prominent public health issue, requiring greater attention to stomatology. Finally, Academician Wang Chen said that the theme of the forum grasped the key issues of academic and technological development and wished the forum a complete success.

Zhu Xinyuan, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, expressed his gratitude to the Chinese Academy of Engineering and all academicians and experts for their support and assistance in the development of the university’s teaching and research, especially in the field of biomedicine and health. Shanghai Jiao Tong University has always adhered to the“four orientations”, aiming at the construction of a world-class medicine school with Chinese characteristics, promoting deep cross-disciplinary integration and collaboration between medical and engineering disciplines. He hoped that the forum would provide professional guidance for the research between oral diseases and major chronic diseases, and pointed out the direction for the construction of the platform for the transformation study of oral ecology and major chronic diseases.

Jiang Fan, Party Secretary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, said that the School of Medicine would continue to support the development of the College of Stomatology, take the cultivation of outstanding and innovative high-level stomatology talents as its own responsibility, make full use of the rich clinical resources of the Ninth People's Hospital, strengthen cooperation with other colleges and universities and study oral diseases and major chronic diseases from the perspective of overall medicine. She hoped that the School of Medicine would build cross-complementarity and strong cooperation with other key laboratories at state, ministerial and provincial levels, and produce a series of creative results with high influence.

Wu Hao, Dean of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, introduced the overview of the Ninth People's Hospital in his speech. He said that the hospital attaches great importance to the construction of Stomatology and regards it as a top priority for the development of the hospital. Based on the hospital’s characteristics of being both specialized and comprehensive, the Ninth People's Hospital integrates oral diseases with systemic chronic diseases to gradually establish a new model of linkage diagnosis and treatment. In the future, the hospital will continue to play the advantages of technological innovation in key disciplines, effectively incorporate stomatological research into the medical research system, actively participate in the construction of the national science and technology innovation system, and tackle a series of major research challenges.

In the Academician Forum session, academicians Wang Chen, Ge Junbo, Dong Jiahong, Yu Shuhong, Lin Dongxin, Zhang Zhiyuan, Li Zhaoshen and Jia Weiping gave wonderful reports on the foundation and disciplinary system of medical science, the construction of precise hepatobiliary surgery, medical bionic materials, esophageal cancer, oral microecology and tumors, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and thoughts on chronic disease prevention and control. An academic exchange platform for comprehensive prevention and control methods and technologies of major chronic diseases was built for sharing our experience in the diagnosis, treatment and research of major chronic diseases, and exploring the future development direction of comprehensive prevention and control of major chronic diseases, which laid the foundation for implementing the Healthy China Initiative.

The "China’s 10,000-People Oral Microecology Project" launch and academic forum was also held at the forum. The project aims to establish a large-scale oral microecology database for Chinese, describe the oral health status of the population, and find the association between oral microecology, oral diseases and major chronic diseases.

This forum also featured a session for young scientists, who shared and analyzed the research progress in areas such as oral mucosal delivery strategies, the impact of periodontitis on systemic diseases and health, the role of BMP signaling pathway in bone remodeling, the relationship betweenPorphyromonas gingivalis and oral squamous cell carcinoma, intestinal microecological homeostasis, and oral ecology and metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.

This forum closely centered on the“Healthy China 2030” initiative for the comprehensive prevention and control of major chronic diseases and exchanged in-depth experiences. The forum featured novel content with cutting-edge topics, forming a strong academic atmosphere. It received enthusiastic responses both online and offline, offering a splendid academic feast for the participants. All participants gained a lot from the integration of academic ideas, and immersed in the essence and charm of stomatology and integrative medicine.
