Message from the Founding Dean (Canada) Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine In 2007, the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine (uOttawa FoM) started to strategically intensify its international activities with a specific tactic. In addition to international collaborations occurring at the research laboratory, division or department level, the uOttawa FoM would concentrate on procuring faculty level partnerships that would be threefold: 1) equal and preferred, 2) sustained by joint investments, and 3) for substantial and socially accountable joint programs and initiatives that would eventually improve health services nearby and far. Coincidentally, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) was on a very similar path to internationalization. Thus, initial meetings in late 2011 rapidly led to the creation of a joint research program in medical sciences and education and to the establishment of a joint school of medicine in Shanghai: the Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine (OSJSM) that was officially launched in October 2014. The OSJSM is the first to introduce a North American undergraduate medical education curriculum in China. It has been structured as a Branch Campus of the uOttawa FoM and will deliver the uOttawa FoM curriculum in English in Shanghai for Chinese students, after successful completion of a one-year pre-med program. The curriculum has received Shanghai District and China National approvals. Similarly to the uOttawa FoM curriculum, it is designed to meet North American accreditation standards and prepare trainees for the qualifying exams required at uOttawa. Furthermore, a goal of the OSJSM is to offer Canadian and Chinese trainees dual degrees from the two partner universities that would uniquely prepare them as physicians, serving society on a national and international level. Beyond joint research programs and the undergraduate medical education program, the OSJSM will offer residency training, beginning with the discipline of Family Medicine, of great interest to China, and extending to other disciplines. It will also offer continuous professional development. This will be achieved through the participation of uOttawa FoM and SJTUSM affiliated hospitals that are partnering for educational, research and other purposes. Thus, the Joint School will serve as a springboard for bi-national core medical education and research programs with unique international components. Yours sincerely, Jacques BRADWEJN, MD, FRCPC, DABPN Founding Dean (Canada) Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa To further enhance the Canada-China collaboration in medical education and health care, with great support from the two countries’ governments, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) co-established the Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine (OSJSM) in October 2014 upon the 170th anniversary of Renji Hospital, affiliated to SJTUSM. The establishment of the OSJSM is our school’s new and important step for cultivating international innovative medical elites. From the strategic points of global talent and education competition and of building Shanghai into a modern metropolis, it is a critical measure of SJTUSM to pioneer new ways of implementing the opening-up policy in medical education and to enhance educational internationalization. OSJSM will enjoy SJTUSM’s preeminent resources and base at Renji Hospital affiliated to SJTUSM. Renji Hospital will apply for accreditation to Canada as an expanded overseas teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. In the future, OSJSM will enable SJTUSM to share first-class medical education resources in North America. OSJSM will advance research in the connotation and laws of medical education, enable the sharing of English-Chinese and French-Chinese bilingual teaching experiences, build a bridge for student-teacher communication and explore a new pattern of joint medical education. We will build the OSJSM into a model for international cooperation in medical education and further improve the educational mode for cultivating medical elites with an international background. With a bright and promising future ahead of us and on behalf of the Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine, I sincerely hope that the two sides can expand this partnership to a wider range and a higher level, create a cross-cultural communication platform, and establish an international education and research environment. Leveraging the rich medical resources and research advantages of the two sides, we will strive to promote development in medical technologies and pioneer the technology frontier, jointly build world-class disciplines and push forward quality education. Yours sincerely, The Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine was co-established by the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM). The program integrates the two sides’ respective advantages in medical care, introducing the advanced medical education model and curriculum from North America to China. The joint medical school is operated strictly up to North America accreditation standards, attaching great importance to cultivating students’ core competencies. The program aims to train professional medical elites who are good communicators, team players, managers, advocates and lifelong learners with a solid foundation of knowledge and proficient skills. In September 2015, OSJSM will embrace the first batch of students. We will spare no efforts to provide preeminent educational resources from both SJTUSM and the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine and to create a unique learning environment that combines the strengths of both the Canadian and Chinese health systems. Mirroring the uOttawa UGME program, the joint school will provide exposure to the whole spectrum of medical specialties and family medicine whilst fostering community involvement in Shanghai and incorporating aspects of traditional Chinese and preventative medicine. This student-oriented program will equip students with systematic professionalism, an international horizon and advanced medical knowledge. We are deeply convinced that, with great efforts from the both sides, the program will be constantly improved and enhanced, playing an important role in the development of a Canada-China medical education partnership.
