On the morning of November 2nd, 2022, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Nursing and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Department of Nurse Anesthesia jointly held the "China-U.S. Anesthesia Nursing Academic Forum." More than 4500 faculties, students, and nurses from our affiliated hospitals interested in anesthesia nursing participated in the event.
Dr. Nicole Damico (Chairperson), Dr. Brenda Wands (Doctoral Program Director), Dr. Jiale Hu (Director of Research and Global Outreach), and Dr. L. Harold Barnwell (Assistant Professor) of VCU Department of Nurse Anesthesia attended the forum. Dr. Qiong Fang(Associate Dean) and Dr. Caifeng Wang (Director of the Fundamental Nursing Department) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Nursing, Dr. Hong Ruan (Deputy Director) of Shanghai Nursing Association, Ms.Yuelai Yang (Head Nurse) of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital Department of Anesthesiology, and Mr. Junyu Zhang (Nursing Team Leader) of Ruijin Hospital Department of Anesthesiology also attended the forum. The forum was hosted by Dr. Bingqian Zhu (Associate Dean) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Nursing.
Dr. Nicole Damico introduced the location, facilities, and doctor of nurse anesthesia practice (DNAP) program of VCU. Dr. Brenda Wands introduced the development of anesthesia nursing and the training of anesthesia nurses in the United States. Dr. L. Harold Barnwell introduced the use of ultrasound, including portable devices, in anesthesia nursing.
Dr. Qiong Fang gave an all-sided introduction to the development, faculty, and teaching of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Nursing. Dr. Hong Ruan presented the development of anesthesia nursing in China, as well as the history of anesthesia nursing education and clinical practice at Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. Dr. Caifeng Wang shared the general situation of anesthesia nursing education in China.
In the second session hosted by Dr. Jiale Hu, The participants had a heated discussion on "Innovative Practices and Technologies in anesthesia nursing: Opportunities and Challenges." The guests shared their views on how to improve the professional skills and training of anesthesia nurses, as well as their vision for anesthesia nursing in China and the United States.
For 20 consecutive years，Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Nurse Anesthesia has been ranked the first in the field of Nurse Anesthesia in the United States. At the forum, the two universities reached a consensus to deepen their cooperation in anesthesia nursing. To make this forum possible, Dr. Jiale Hu has made a great many efforts. He is an SJTU graduate of the class of 2013, and also the first alumnus inducted as the Fellow of American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Nursing will continue to explore long-term international collaboration in teaching and scientific research, and constantly promote the development of anesthesia nursing in China.
