In order to enhance the academic and joint research capabilities of nursing talents, further expand their international vision, and establish platform for international exchange, the School of Nursing of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Cambridge Center for the Integration of Science,Technology and Culture (CCISTC)have accomplished the “Cambridge Research Programme in Nursing” successfully.
The training focuses on “qualitative research”, and Professor Mark Hayter, as Head of Nursing,Manchester Metropolitan University, Fellow of Royal College of Nursing in UK, Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy in UK and Editor in Chief Journal of Clinical Nursing, led his team to preside over lectures. Since the release of enrollment information in November 2022, students of all grades applied for the training actively. After screening, 45 professionals, including undergraduate, master, doctoral students and talents in the discipline of nursing, were selected for the training. The course was launched on December 9th and concluded in February 2023. Among them, 28% of the trainees received Grade A, 53.3% of the trainees received Grade B, 17.7% of the trainees received Grade C, and all 45 students met the completion requirements.
Theteaching method of this program is novel, in the forms of Workshop, Lecture, and Supervision, by dint of Online Teaching Platform of Cambridge University. Among them, Assistant Professor Laurentya Olga used heuristic teaching methods to guide students to think about the purpose, significance and methodology of scientific research. She used multiple clinical or scientific research examples to provide students with thinking methods. Furthermore, Professor Mark Hayter presented a wonderful and cutting-edge feast for students with five live lectures. He provided comprehensive guidance from the concept and theory of qualitative research to the establishment of research issues, sampling, data collection, data analysis, hybrid research, and system evaluation, etc, with particular emphasis on the rigor of textual data collation when conducting qualitative research. During the course, the trainees can also ask questions to tutors by leaving a message or raising hands. The tutors responded timely, and removed potential puzzles of trainees in qualitative research authoritatively. The teaching atmosphere was warm and the effect was remarkable.
In order to ensure the implementation and promotion of the Cambridge program, and improve the learning experience of trainees in the training courses given in English only, the College designated four teachers, includingWang Xiyi, Hu Xuechen, Lu Xuemei, and Xia Biying, to participate in each course, and supervise and guide the progress of teaching. The College also arranged Ms. Xie Xin, the liaison of international exchange, to take charge of overall coordination to promote the implementation of the program. The program team inquired opinions of trainees before, during and after class, provided pertinent evaluations and sincere assistance, and then made feedback to the Cambridge teaching team timely so as to improve the teaching quality.
2023 will witness more intensive international cooperation, active integration and joint progress of global partners, and pursuit of better performance. The College of Nursing will take the cultivation of international nursing talents as primary mission unswervingly, and promote the high-quality development of the discipline further.
