SJTUSM has ranked top by its overall discipline strength among China’s medical institutions. There are 16 key disciplines approved by the Ministry of Education, 18 key disciplines approved by Shanghai, 3 disciplines listed as Shanghai top 5% disciplines and 6 listed as Shanghai top 10% disciplines. Basic medicine, clinical medicine, stomatology and pharmacy are selected as national “double first-class” disciplines. Clinical medicine is qualified to apply for the national "first-class discipline training program". In the fifth round of discipline evaluation by China’s Ministry of Education, SJTUSM’s clinical medicine, basic medicine, and stomatology entered the rank of China’s best disciplines.
By 2023, the number of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects obtained by SJTUSM has exceeded 700 for five consecutive years.
