Liver transplantation is a clinic specialty of Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.Since the first pediatric liver transplantation was performed in October 2006, Renji has built the largest pediatric liver transplantation center in the world, and the volume of liver transplantations has ranked first in China for ten consecutive years since 2011. By now it has performed over 2,800 transplantation operations cumulatively, accounting for 40% of China’s total pediatric transplantations. The survival rates at 1 and 5 years after transplantation are 94% and 91% respectively, taking lead in the world. As the liver transplantation center with the largest number of pediatric liver transplantation cases in the world, Renji has gained rich experience in the treatment of pediatric end-stage liver diseases, especially in pediatric liver transplantation and pediatric liver disease sample database. Since November 2014, Renji has successfully performed living donor liver transplantations for nearly 40 Malaysian children patients, and in 2019, Renji helped Malaysia operate successfully the first and second pediatric living donor liver transplantation. Besides, Renji assisted in establishing pediatric living donor liver transplantation technology, saving more children patients and achieving great social reactions from the two governments and people. In 2021, based on the existing cooperation, Renji’s Pediatric Liver Transplantation Clinic, along with leading pediatric liver disease centers in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, established the Shanghai-Southeast Asia Pediatric Translational Medical Center for End-Stage Liver Disease. They conduct basic and clinical research cooperation in several fields, build the Shanghai-Southeast Asia Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease Research Team, and provide cloud-based disease diagnosis, clinical technical support and training, and remote follow-up to partners with the help of Wise Information Technology of 120. This accelerates the promotion, development and innovation of pediatric liver disease treatment and pediatric liver transplantation-related technologies. The Shanghai-Southeast Asia Pediatric End-stage Liver Disease Translational MedicalCenter, which integrates basic research, clinical trials, disease prevention, treatment and follow-up, will further improve the overall diagnosis and research level of pediatric end-stage liver disease in partner countries.

In the context of global COVID-19 pandemic, the “International Joint Laboratory on Tropical Diseases in the Greater Mekong Sub-region” is supported by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality and is being built by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Chinese Center for Tropical Diseases Research and Lao Tropical and Public Health Institute. The establishment of the joint laboratory aims to strengthen China's participation in global health governance and share the experience on tropical disease control. It is believed that with the joint support of all parties, the laboratory will make breakthroughs in talent training, scientific research and strategy transformation in Greater Mekong Subregion.

The “International Joint Laboratory on Tropical Diseases Control in Greater Mekong Subregion” was unveiled on October 22, 2021. The launching ceremony of the laboratory was organized to witness the important historical moment in the cooperation of tropical diseases control between China and Laos.

COVID-19 pandemic is still affecting the world and sparking new thinking about infectious diseases. Cooperation is the most effective way to control infectious diseases on the earth. Chinese government proposed “Belt and Road” initiative, which aims at strengthening cooperation among relevant countries in many fields, including public health. China and Laos have a long history of cooperation in the field of tropical diseases. The Regional Network of Asian Schistosomiasis and Other Important Helminth Zoonoses (RNAS+) has been jointly established and maintained over 20 years. The establishment of the International Joint Laboratory on Tropical Disease is another step forward in China-Laos cooperation in tropical diseases.
