Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) was formerly known as Shanghai Second Medical College, which came into being through a merger of St. John’s University School of Medicine (1896-1952), Aurora University School of Medicine (1911-1952), and Tongde Medical College (1918-1952) in the nationwide reorganization of universities in 1952 and changed its name to Shanghai Second Medical University in 1985. In July 2005, Shanghai Second Medical University merged with Shanghai Jiao Tong University to establish a new key medical school, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, under the joint jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Shanghai municipal government.
SJTUSM has two campuses located in Huangpu and Minhang districts respectively. The Pudong Campus project was approved in 2019 and started to break ground in 2020. In 2021, the construction of Hainan International Medical Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was launched. The century-old SJTUSM thus ushers in a new era in which its presence spans from Puxi to Pudong, from Huangpu to Zhangjiang High-tech Park, and from Xintiandi to Shanghai International Medical Zone (SIMZ).
SJTUSM has 25 secondary schools (departments) and 12 affiliated hospitals. There are 8 first-level disciplines authorized to offer doctoral degrees and 4 first-level disciplines to offer postdoctoral programs, which cover Biology, Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine and Stomatology. SJTUSM runs an eight-year Clinical Medicine program (doctoral degree awarded), an eight-year Clinical Medicine program (doctoral degree in stomatology awarded), and 8 undergraduate programs (Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Pediatrics, Biomedical Science, Preventive Healthcare, Medical Laboratory Technology, Food Safety and Nutrition, and Nursing). Among them, Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Biomedical Science, Preventive Healthcare, Nursing, Pediatrics, and Medical Laboratory Technology are national first-class undergraduate programs; the eight-year Clinical Medicine program (French Class), the eight-year Clinical Medicine program (four-year master plus four-year doctoral), the five-year Clinical Medicine program (Pediatrics), and the five-year Clinical Medicine program (English Class) are specialty classes of SJTUSM. In 2019, SJTUSM passed the certification of the Clinical Medicine program by the Ministry of Education at a high level of quality. It was the only university in China that was inspected by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) expert group and was highly praised by both foreign and Chinese experts.
Currently, there are 9,026 enrolled students, including 3,213 undergraduates, 5,533 postgraduates and 280 international students. SJTUSM has made remarkable achievements in the construction of scientific research bases and platforms. It boasts 1 national key science and technology facility (National Facility for Translational Medicine (Shanghai)), 2 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering research center, 1 national base for international science and technology cooperation, 2 MoE key laboratories, 1 MoE engineering research center, 4 key laboratories of the National Health Commission, 25 Shanghai key laboratories, 8 Shanghai engineering technology research centers and 2 Shanghai engineering research centers.
SJTUSM has been deepening international collaboration and exchanges to enhance internationalization of medical education. It has built extensive partnerships with 64 universities and research institutes in 21 countries and regions. SJTUSM has been strengthening its scientific collaboration with world prestigious universities. The joint research institutes that SJTUSM has established include Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine - Center for Single-Cell Omics, and One Health Center with the University of Edinburgh. About 50 overseas study tour (short-term) programs have been conducted together with 37 universities in 12 countries, with 50.4% of its undergraduates participating in the programs. SJTUSM has also improved the education of international students. In 2020, it successfully passed the quality certification of study in China by China Education Association for International Exchange, becoming the first and only university in China possessing an eight-year certification period at present.
