Shanghai Tongren Hospital, also known as Tongren Hospital Affiliated To Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Shanghai Tongren Red Cross Hospital, was established in 1866 and is one of the earliest Western medicine hospitals since Shanghai has been opened for the foreign trade.

For more than 100 years, adhering to the hospitality of "One heart and one mind, kindness and expert", we have always been committed to the development of medical activities and the protection of people's health. At the end of the 19th century, the city's first ophthalmic surgery and oophorectomy were carried out; in the early 20th century, the modern operating room, the first ambulance and advanced X-ray were equipped; in the 1970s, China's first color TV endoscope was developed in our hospital.

Today's Tongren Hospital is a Grade B tertiary hospital, located in the Hongqiao area of western Shanghai. It consists of divisions: Xianxia Road Campus, Hami Road Teaching Center and Hongqiao International Medical Research Institute. The hospital covers an area of 80 acres. It has a construction area of 130,000 square meters and 1200 sickbeds. The service scope covers 700,000 permanent residents of Changning District and 1.5 million people in the nearby six districts. It is responsible for the main task of rescue of critical, acute and severe diseases, also the prevention and control of the major infectious diseases.

As early as 1896, the hospital had been the internship hospital of St. John's College of Medicine (predecessor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine). It established the earliest nurse school in China at the beginning of the last century. At present, our hospital has 14 doctoral supervisors and 16 master's tutors from the Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. It has 7 standardized training bases for residents in Shanghai and 1 national standardized training base for residents. It has undertaken the teaching tasks of many medical colleges in China, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Naval Medical University, etc.

Since 2014, our hospital has cooperated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine to establish the Hongqiao International Medical Research Institute, and has strived to build a high-level research platform and translational medicine research center. In 2019, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Innovation and Transformation of Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention and Treatment was established; In 2021, it became a sub-center of the Clinical Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

With the infrastructure renovation, optimizing the layout and process, improving the medical treatment experience, shaping the hospital brand and practicing the social responsibility, our hospital has won wide acclaim from patients; the title of the 5th and 6th National Civilized hospital; the “Shanghai Civilized hospital” for ten consecutive times.
