Shanghai Chest Hospital, the earliest established Grade-A tertiary specialized hospitals in China, specializes in the treatment of heart, lung, esophagus, trachea and mediastinal diseases. It integrates medical treatment, teaching and scientific research together. In 2004, the hospital became the Shanghai Red Cross Chest Hospital. In 2005, it became the affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 2022, it became the affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
On November 2, 1957, the Shanghai municipal government teamed up the key strengths of cardiothoracic medicine field of the city to launch Shanghai Chest Hospital. Three of the four founders of our nation’s cardiothoracic surgery, Prof Huang Jiasi, Prof Lan Xichun and Prof Gu Kaishi, were appointed as the first president and vice president of the hospital respectively.
The hospital now has 10 clinical departments which are cardiovascular surgery, cardiology, thoracic surgery, pulmonary medicine, oncology, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, emergency, ICU, radiation oncology, and anesthesiology. There are also 10 medical technology departments which are radiology, pathology, pharmacy, clinical laboratory, nuclear medicine, ultrasound diagnosis, cardiac function, pulmonary function, endoscope and nutrition.
The hospital is undertaking the national key discipline (cardiology), the national key clinical specialties (thoracic surgery, cardiology and cardiac vascular surgery), Twelfth Five-Year Plan key specialty of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine), Shanghai key clinical specialties (thoracic surgery and pulmonary medicine), Shanghai Lung Cancer Center (oncology), and Shanghai key medical disciplines.
It is the first hospital to set up the internationally certificated chest pain center. It is also one of the nation’s first batch to launch the China Chest Pain Center, China Heart Failure Center, China Atrial Fibrillation Center and cancer pain management demonstration wards. In addition, the hospital has Shanghai Jiao Tong University Atrial Fibrillation Diagnosis and Treatment Center and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Esophageal Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Center.
Shanghai Chest Hospital has more than 1000 beds and 28 clinical wards. It also has SICU, CCU, RICU, day-care wards, clinical research wards and MDT wards. The hospital specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiothoracic diseases, forming two big groups of thoracic oncology and cardiovascular disease disciplines.
The thoracic surgery department, featuring the widest spectrum of diseases and the most comprehensive technology subspecities in China, performs more than 19,000 surgeries each year. Among them, more than 90 percent are minimally invasive surgery. The coincidence rate of preoperative diagnosis and postoperative pathological of lung malignant tumors exceeds 90 percent. The number of hospital’s Grade 3 and 4 surgery ranks the first among the city’s tertiary hospitals.
The hospital initiates to propose the multi-disciplinary comprehensive treatment of lung cancer in China. It is also one of the first centers to carry out targeting therapy and immune therapy for lung cancer in China. The hospital takes the leading position in imaging diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, endoscopic interventional therapy, pathological diagnosis and genetic testing all year round, and leads clinical guidelines many times for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
Shanghai Chest Hospital is one of the earliest centers to carry out the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in China. Prof Lan Xichun, the first vice president, performed the first mitral valve closure surgery in China. The hospital is good at treating various types of cardiovascular vascular diseases, especially some serious ones.
The hospital is among the first batch to perform surgeries including coronary arteries, heart valves, congenital heart disease, heart transplantation and atrial fibrillation. It takes a leading position on interventional therapy of complex coronary heart disease, comprehensive treatment of atrial fibrillation (radiofrequency ablation, left atrial appendage occlusion, anticoagulation and etc), interventional treatment of abnormal cardiopulmonary vascular structure, advanced cardiac pacing technique, end-stage heart failure and etc. The number of radiofrequency ablation surgeries of atrial fibrillation has been ranking the top in the Asia-Pacific region for many years.
Since the establishment of the hospital, it has created many "first" in the development history of cardiothoracic surgery in China: They are the first bubble-type artificial heart-lung machine, the first plastic seamless artificial blood vessel, plush polyester artificial blood vessel, the first human lung adenocarcinoma cell line, the first unilateral single lung transplantation for an unrelated donor adult patient in the world, the first coronary bypass and cardiac valve replacement surgery, the first da Vinci surgery and etc.
Shanghai Chest Hospital has the Shanghai Thoracic Oncology Research Institute, central laboratory, Cardiopulmonary Vascular Translational Research Center, bio-bank, National Drug Clinical Trial Institute and a high-tech transformation park. The hospital also undertakes the key research and development projects of Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, national 863 key research projects and key projects of National Nature Science Foundation of China. It was awarded the National Science Congress Award, the National Invention Award and the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress.
The hospital has more than 1,600 employees including 173 chief and deputy chief physicians, 69 doctoral and master supervisors, and 35 recipients of the State Council Special Allowance. It also has outstanding young and middle-aged experts of National Health and Family Planning Commission, National Outstanding Youths, Shanghai Leading Talents, Shanghai Subject Chief Scientist, Shanghai Top Youths, Shanghai Pujiang Program, Shanghai Outstanding Medical Talents and Shanghai Outstanding Young Medical Talents.
At the same year of the establishment, the hospital was designated as the national cardiothoracic surgery training base by Ministry of Health. Thousands of cardiothoracic surgery physicians have been trained nationwide. The hospital also has the training bases of interventional treatment of coronary, arrhythmia and structural heart disease, and endoscope. Moreover, it focuses on the training projects of national inpatient physicians and specialist physicians.
The hospital has recruited overseas doctors for the long-term training of thoracic surgery and is designated as the only demonstration center by Asia Thoracic Surgery Education Committee. It also undertakes the scientific and teaching research tasks and post-doctoral training tasks from many universities such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The hospital adheres to the direction of public welfare hospitals and fulfills its social responsibilities actively. It has been sending backbones to Tibet Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region for years. The hospital has participated in the charity assistance for children with congenital heart disease in poverty-stricken areas for more than 10 years.
