Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital, initially founded in 1904, has long been reputed as the fountain of ultrasound diagnosis in China, the global cradle of amputated limb replantation, and the birthplace of “China Hand” (digit and hand reconstruction techniques). The Hospital has been awarded National Model Work Unit six times for 17 consecutive years while earning A-rated performance evaluations from Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center for 16 consecutive years. It was ranked 33rd in the performance assessment of national tertiary public hospitals, 25th in Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) for Chinese hospitals in 2022, 20th in China’s hospitals rankings released by Fudan University in 2009, 76th in Nature Index table of worldwide healthcare institutions in 2021, and 12th in China’s Hospital Ranking of Innovation and Transformation in 2022. With 2,366 approved beds, the Hospital witnesses more than 5 million outpatient and emergency visits, approximately 150,000 discharged patients and over 110,000 operations per year.

The Hospital has been recognized for its excellence in six National Key Clinical Specialties, three National Key Disciplines, and one Key Speciality of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a national model of traditional Chinese medicine practice among general hospitals, a municipal flagship hospital for integrated Chinese and Western medicines, and a municipally authorized center for trauma emergencies and care. It has also established the National Primary Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Office, Shanghai Institute of Microsurgery on Extremities, Shanghai Institute of Diabetes, Shanghai Key Laboratory for Diabetes, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Sleep and Breathing Disorders, and the Research Center for Orthopedic Biomaterials and Repair and Regeneration Engineering.

The Hospital has been an incubator for pioneering scientific breakthroughs with three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, two chief scientists of the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), five young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions recognized by National Health Commission, and five recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Over the years, the Hospital has received 291 awards for scientific research achievements at national, provincial/ministerial and bureau levels, including one First Prize of National Invention Award and nine Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Awards. Dedicated to medical training and education for MD/PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Hospital was honored with one Second Prize of National Teaching Achievement Award.
