Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was founded in 1920. In 2015, the Third People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was reorganized and merged into Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital.

In 2020, the Hospital Management Institute, Fudan University published its Best Hospital Reputation in China Rankings. Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital ranked 23rd nationally, 1st in Plastic Surgery, 3rd in Stomatology, 7th in Otolaryngology, 9th in Ophthalmology, and Orthopaedics nominated.
