Fan Xianqun, Han ethnic group, was born in 1964 in Shouxian County, Anhui Province. He is a member of the Chinese Communist Party, doctor of medicine, professor, chief physician and PhD supervisor. Fan graduated from Anhui Bengbu Medical College in 1987 and got his bachelor’s degree in medicine. In 1998, he graduated from Shanghai Second Medical University with a doctorate degree in medicine. He currently serves as vice president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, chancellor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, dean of China Hospital Development Institute, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, member of the 13th Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and delegate to the 11th CPC Shanghai Congress.
Prof. Fan is a renowned ophthalmologist, a Chang Jiang Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education, and Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is President of APSOOP, former President of the Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery, and has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) and Fellowship Ad Hominem of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Concurrently, Fan serves as Chairman of Ocular Oncology Committee of China Anti-Cancer Association, Vice-President of the Ophthalmologists Society of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, head of the Ocular Plastic Surgery & Orbital Disease Group of the Ophthalmological Branch of Chinese Medical Association, Vice-President of Shanghai Medical Association, Vice-President of Shanghai Medical Doctor Association, and Director of Shanghai Key Laboratory of Orbital Diseases and Ocular Oncology. Fan has long been committed to clinical treatment of and basic research on orbital diseases and ocular oncology. He has led his team to build key technology systems such as the endoscopic navigation system for orbital surgery, which enhances the safety and efficacy of orbital surgery, and has developed new technologies of interventional chemotherapy and new treatment scheme for ocular malignant tumors, which has helped more patients save their eyes or life. Fan has been in charge of 15 national projects including those under Project 863, national key R&D programs and key programs of the National Natural Science Foundation. He has also published over 190 SCI papers as the first author or the corresponding author in journals such as Cell Stem Cell, Science Advances, Advanced Materials and Ophthalmology. 29 of the published papers have an impact factor higher than 10; 26 patents have been granted; and 4 research findings have been commercialized. Fan is the chief editor of Ophthalmology, a textbook under the 13th Five-Year Plan. He has educated 38 talents at Shanghai municipal level and national level. As the lead contributor, Fan won 2 second prizes of State Science and Technology Progress Award and 3 first prizes of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. He is also a recipient of Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award, Wu Jieping-Paul Janssen Medical & Pharmaceutical Award, the first Innovator Award of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, Asia-Pacific Distinguished Service Award, and Outstanding Achievement Award of Chinese Ophthalmological Society.
Prof. Fan was elected academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2021.
