Prof. Zhang Disheng (1916-2005), Academician of Chinese Engineering Academy, is a prominent founder and pioneer of China’s plastic, reconstructive, and reparative surgery. He is the founder and first director of the Department of Plastic and Reconstuctive Surgery of Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
As a surgeon and scholar, he was innovative and fruitful. In 1951, he established the China’s first medical center for trauma, burn and cold injury. In 1958, he participated in the momentous rescue of Qiu Caikang. In 1965, he reported the China’s first experimental success on microsurgical transplantation. In 1966, he assisted in the China’s first finger replantation. In the 1970s, his team applied microsurgical techniques to tackle a diversity of intractable conditions. In 1976, he successfully performed the China’s first surgery for orbital hypertelorism. After that, his team treated various types of craniofacial anomalies, with notable successes. In the 1980s, his heat and bandage treatment attained worldwide acknowledgement for its effectiveness on chronic lymphedema of limbs. In his career, he published over 40 academic books and 300 peer-reviewed papers. Besides, a leader of the important plastic surgey societies, he contributed significantly to medical education and international exchange.
He won a number of titles and awards, including Heliang Heli Science and Technology Progress Award, Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, Outstanding Alumni Award of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Lifetime Excellence Award of Chinese Society of Microsurgery, 1982 Maliniac Lecturer of American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and International Humanitarian in Plastic Surgery Award of American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
