Jiang Shaoji (1919-1995) was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from Wuxi Middle School in 1937. In 1938, he began to study at Saint John's University in Shanghai and earned a bachelor degree of science in 1942. He graduated from the Saint John's University School of Medicine in 1945 with a doctoral degree in medicine. After graduation, he worked at the Internal Medicine Department of Hongren Hospital in Shanghai, and was appointed vice-president of this hospital in 1954. Later Hongren Hospital was merged with Shanghai Second Medical University. Jiang began to work at Renji Hospital in 1957. Jiang successively served as: Vice-president of Renji Hospital; deputy director and then director of the Internal Medicine Department; director of the Internal Medicine Teaching and Research Office; deputy director and director of the second section of the Medical Department; president of Shanghai Institute of Digestive Disease and vice-president of Shanghai Institute of Immunology.
Since the 1950s and 1960s, Jiang and his team have made an enormous breakthrough in schistosome prevention work. They eliminated schistosome, which had plagued China for thousands of years. He established the specialty of gastroenterology and later founded the Digestive Disease Institute. Jiang laid a solid basis for China's medicine to catch up with the world. He was the pioneer in building the rheumatology and immunology department and made indelible contributions to China's medicine. Jiang is extensively respected and admired among peers at home and abroad.
