Shanghai Institute of Virology was built on September 26, 2022, which is affiliated at both Shanghai Municipal Health Commission and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and run by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The first director is Professor Yi Guan, a world-famous virologist who has been studying the origin and evolution of emerging infectious diseases, including SARS-CoV and numerous avian influenza viruses with human-infection potential. Currently, Shanghai Institute of Virology has four major research directions: Virus evolution and cross-species transmission, pathogenic mechanisms of major viral infectious diseases, antiviral immunology and development of prophylactic and therapeutic measures again viral infections, and virus infection-associated cancers. The institute will have its own research building in Pudong in 2023, with modern core facilities and excellent working environment. The new building will be able to hold approximate 30 research groups. In addition, it will have a totally new BSL-3 lab on the Pudong campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, which is designed to be able to perform challenge studies using various animals, including non-human primates.
