On the morning of March 25th, coordinated by the British Embassyto China and the British Consulate-General in Shanghai, a delegation consisting of representatives from British universities and medical institutions, including the University of Birmingham, the University of Liverpool, the University of Bristol, University College London, Queen's University Belfast, and the London Centre for Medical Education, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals. The delegation, led by Rahul Agarwal, Counsellor for Healthcare & Life Sciences, Department for Business and Trade,British Embassy Beijing, comprised 39representatives from 21 institutions andis the largest British medical education delegation sent to China since 2019. ViceChancellor Zheng Junke, heads of departments and offices, such as the Office of International Affairs, Academic Affairs Office, Graduate School, Office of Science and Technology, participated in the meeting.
Counsellor Rahul Agarwal expressed that the UK has significant advantages in the field of medical education, with four of the world's top ten universities being in the UK. The institutions represented in the delegation have produced over 30 Nobel Prize winners. He hopes that through cooperation withSJTUSM, they can join forces to cultivate more outstanding talents and produce more medical scientific research results.
ViceChancellor Zheng Junke welcomed the visit of the British delegation and expressed the hope that both sides could strengthen their understanding, fully utilize their respective advantages, build a strong platform for mutual exchange and cooperation, and promote high-quality development in the fields of medical education, research, and healthcare.
During the exchange and discussion, the University of Liverpool, representing the institutions, shared its development experience and introduced successful cooperation cases with Chinese universities. Louise Claire Kenny, Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, expressed the hope to leverage their advantages in aging, chronic diseases, public health, and mental healthand collaborate with SJTUSM. In theQ&A session, institutions from the UK expressedstrong willing to carry out jointstudent training, personnel exchange, and joint research in clinical medicine, basic medicine, nursing, and other fields.
Somedelegates of the UK Healthcare Education Mission also visited Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC). Zhao Min, president of the Shanghai Mental Health Center, Li Chunbo, the Deputy Secretary, and otherSMHCleaders participated in the meeting. They discussed potentialcollaborative opportunities in adult mental health, children and adolescents' mental health,mental disorders, and other fields in terms of medical services, clinical practice, quality control, education, and talent programs.SMHC had previously conducted related cooperation and signed strategic cooperation agreements with several UK universities and medical institutions in the field of mental health.The UK delegation’s visit will help to expand cooperation between China and the UK in professional talent training and clinical technical services.
In the afternoon of March 25th, The UK Healthcare Education Mission visited Renji Hospital.Vice President Zhang Jidong and Sun Yun of Renji Hospital received the delegation. The two sides conducted in-depth and friendly exchanges on hospital development, key disciplines, and medical education. They hope to have more opportunities for mutual learning and exchange in clinical diagnosis, treatment, and research, and to develop deeper visits and cooperation in the future.
This visit is the largest medical education delegation from the UK to China in recent years,containingmany delegates from variousinstitutions with strong medical resources. The visitfurther promotes comprehensive collaboration between SJTUSM and UK healthcareinstitutions, facilitating the development of world-class disciplines.
