In response to the call of General Secretary Xi to "lead with the construction of ecological civilization to coordinate the relationship between man and nature" and practice the concept of one health, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine-National Center for Tropical Diseases Research with China CDC Parasitic Disease institute carried out anti-invasion activities (Fu Shou Snails) in Chongming Island in Shanghai.
Chongming Island is positioned as a "world-class ecological island", takes the path of ecological priority and green development, and strives to create a "highland" for urban modern green agriculture. However, in the past five years, Fushou snails have spread rapidly in Shanghai, and their distribution has covered various districts in Shanghai, which has caused a relatively large negative effect on the environmental landscape, agricultural production and human health.
Fushou nails are the intermediate host of Angiostrongylus cantonensis and are listed as one of the first 16 species of alien species that have invaded our country announced by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Fushou snails entered Chongming Island in 2019. Thus the survey of the distribution of Fushou snails in the whole territory of Chongming Island was carried out.
This survey provided an important practical basis for improving the monitoring system and intervention measures of the snails in Chongming area, and effectively curbing the further spread of snails in the local area. The survey recommends that the relevant departments closely monitor and continuously investigate the distribution of snails in Chongming, collect a large number of samples and rodents in breeding grounds for pathogen detection. On the other hand, the survey suggests that the relevant sides should strengthen market supervision and prohibit the circulation and trading of snails in the market. Besides, regular local scientific popularization of knowledge about the hazards and potential health risks of the snails ought to be carried out in the local area.
