The Fifth Hainan International Health Industry Expo was held in Haikou from 12 to 14 in November 2021. As one of the sub-forums of this expo, the “Belt and Road” One Health Seminar: Phage and Drug Resistance Control was also held on 13 Nov. The seminar was successfully held on the morning of the day and the whole process was broadcast live. The seminar was jointly organized by the School of Global Health of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine-National Center for Tropical Diseases Research, Shanghai Jiao Tong University-University of Edinburgh One Health Center, Shanghai Institute of Phage and Drug Resistance, Fudan University, and Co-hosted by Hainan Provincial People's Hospital.
This seminar focuses on one health development and the application of bacteriophages under the pandemic situation. Based on the discussion of the challenges of population microbial resistance and environmental microbial resistance, it also discusses the control of bacteriophages in superbug infections.
Professor Gregory C. Gray from Duke University first talked about the strategy of responding to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases from the global pandemic of COVID-19. His research examples elicited and explained the concept of One Health, and introduced the training work of the one health research method carried out by his team on a global scale, and how to use the one health concept to deal with new and emerging infectious diseases. To conduct research on diseases and advocate the use of the concept of one health to deal with the challenges faced by future pandemic diseases.
Professor Minggui Wang systematically introduced the current status of bacterial resistance in China, the management system of clinical application of antimicrobial drugs in China, and the countermeasures for bacterial resistance in China. In his view, it is not enough to focus solely on hospitals and clinical patients. It is also necessary to focus on animal drug resistance. Only by integrating human and animal drug resistance from the perspective of one health can we comprehensively and systematically deal with the increasingly serious problem of drug resistance.
Professor Xiaokui Guo introduced the knowledge and research progress of phage biology, the great contribution of phage research in promoting the development of life sciences, the interaction of phage and bacteria, the connection between phage and human health and its application in the field of one health.
