From the civet-origin SARS virus to the widespread avian flu and the difficult-to-prevent and-control African swine fever, we are fully aware that the protection of animal health and food safety of animal origin is not only closely related to human health, but also to the biological, ecological, and public health of the nation. The phrase "healthy animals - healthy food - healthy people" has become indivisible. Based on the concept of "One World, One Health," the School of Global Health of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and the National Center for Tropical Diseases have established four departments, including Animal Health and Food Safety (AHFS).
Relying on the Chongming base of the Center for One Health Research, AHFS focuses on the two core areas of "animal health" and "food safety of animal origin," encompassing large animals such as pigs, cattle, and sheep, poultry such as chickens, ducks, and pigeons, aquaculture animals such as fish, shrimps, and crabs, and wild animals such as migratory birds. AHFS studies prevention and control of significant animal diseases, control of new and re-emerging human and veterinary diseases, mechanisms of transmission of antimicrobial resistant bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes of animal origin, rapid detection of animal and related food pathogens and new technologies will be paid more attention to ensure product safety, development and utilization of new antibacterial green biological agents such as phages, etc. and the control and healthy and safe environment. At the same time, our department will provide and accelerate robust scientific and technological support for the healthy and sustainable growth of China's livestock and poultry sector and food safety.
