Recently, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and its National Postdoctoral Management Committee issued theNotice on Approval of 510 New PostdoctoralStations including the One in Philosophy at the Northeast Normal University (MHRSS Communication [2023] No. 108). The two stationsinpublic health & preventive medicine and nursing applied byShanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine were approved. This represents a major breakthrough inSJTUSM’s postdoctoraldevelopment.
SJTUSM had its first postdoctoral program (in clinical medicine) back in 1991, and now it has six in basic medicine, clinical medicine, stomatology, biology, public health & preventive medicine, and nursing. Since 1992 when the very first postdoctoral fellow was enrolled, SJTUSM has admitted more than 1,800 in aggregate and more than 900 of them have completed theirtrainings. That is, SJTUSM has successfully cultivated a large group of outstanding young people talented in medical education, research, and management, and nearly 40% of them have stayed to work. In recent years, SJTUSM has attached great importance to the postdoctoral services, by continuously enhancing support and further improving the level of postdoctoral management. As a result, the recruitment and training of postdoctoral fellows continues to improve in terms of both quantity and quality, and the postdoctoral team continues to grow and make remarkable achievements. As a matter of fact, a total of 46 SJTUSM postdoctoral fellows have been selected forthe National Postdoctoral Program for Innovative Talents, topping the medical colleges around China. In addition, 185 have been selected for the Shanghai“Super Postdoctoral” Incentive Program, ranking first among the local universities for five years in a row. Currently, there are over 700 in-station postdoctoral fellows at SJTUSM.
Public health & preventative medicine program
The public health & preventive medicine program is mainly based on Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Public Health (SJTUSPH), under which there are departments of epidemiology and biostatistics, nutrition and food safety, environment and health, women’s and children’s health, community health and behavioral medicine, and social medicine and health service management; centers for early life health, proactive health and evidence-based decision making, smart health, and medical popularization & health communication; as well as first-level programs for doctoral and master’s degree in public health & preventive medicine, and professional master’s degree in public health (MPH). SJTUSPH has also been selected for national first-class undergraduate education and approved for Shanghai’s doctoral education in public health.
SJTUSPH focuses on four major areas, namely, public health security and emergency management, digital lifecycle health research, public health policy and management, and global health and total health. It operates with the National Digital Literacy and Skills Training Base, Shanghai Vector Biological Prevention and Control Training Base, Shanghai Nutrition Innovation Platform Digital Nutrition Center, Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center for Translational Medicine - Food Safety and Toxicology Evaluation Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Digital Medical Research Institute Digital Public Health Center, along with other platforms. By taking advantages of the combination of new medicine, science, engineering, and liberal arts, SJTUSPH has created the development model featuring“one body, multiple wings, and multidisciplinary collaboration”, and a“big public health” cluster that integrates“treatment + prevention convergence, medicine + engineering or science or liberal arts, macro + micro, and population + foundation”, leading the domestic universities in both international and Chinese discipline rankings such as US NEWS, ARWU, and TIMES.
