Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine German Alumni Association and Medical Branch of SJTU German Alumni Association Officially Established

On November 17, the inauguration ceremony of SJTUSM German Alumni Association and the Medical Branch of SJTU German Alumni Association was held in Heidelberg, Germany. Vice President of SJTU, Chancellor of SJTUSM, and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Fan Xianqun, together with over 50 alumni living and working in Germany, witnessed the establishment of the alumni organization. The event was hosted by alumni Zhang Yunxin and Li Shilun.

Fan Xianqun warmly welcomed the German alumni and guests and extended sincere greetings on behalf of all faculty and students of SJTUSM. He emphasized that alumni represent the collective achievements of the university, serve as valuable resources, and contribute to the university's reputation through their impact on society. He highlighted the importance of the German Alumni Association in fostering connections among alumni, uniting their strengths, and promoting their development. Additionally, he noted its significance in enhancing Sino-German medical exchanges and elevating the international influence of their alma mater. Reflecting on the history and accomplishments of SJTUSM, Fan Xianqun described it as an institution characterized by inclusivity, innovation, and global vision. He recognized the achievements of the alumni in Germany and offered three hopes for the alumni association: 1) Strengthen communication and expand its membership. 2) Unite alumni and build a platform for mutual support and exchange. 3) Serve as a bridge of friendship to promote international medical collaboration.

He also expressed gratitude to those involved in the establishment of the association and invited alumni to stay connected with their alma mater, contributing wisdom and strength to its development.

The inaugural president, Yun Haiyang, expressed his commitment to upholding the school and university’s motto, He pledged to unite and energize alumni, creating a vibrant and creative network that fosters experience-sharing and friendship.

Zhang Yunxin, the Secretary-General of the German Alumni Association, shared the preparation process for its establishment. Zhang Shuni, Secretary-General of the SJTU German Alumni Association, provided an overview of the broader organization. Shen Liang, Deputy Director of the School Office and Vice President of the Alumni Association, introduced the school’s status. Zhang Lili, Director of the Development Liaison Office and Secretary-General of the Alumni Association, announced the list of the first council members. Alumni Yun Haiyang, Zhang Yunxin, Du Legen, Tang Zhiwei, Huang Yuanhao, Guan Xiaoying, Shi Yongzhen, Cao Yuan, and Li Shilun were elected as council members. The ceremony also featured an alumni forum where representatives, including Shi Yongzhen, Ma Xiao, and Zhang Yueru, shared their insights.

The event was attended by Professor Liu Haikun from the German Cancer Research Center; Kang Li, a member of the School Party Committee, Director of the Publicity Department, and Director of Discipline Planning; Xu Lin, Director of the Office of International Affairs; Shen Baiyong, Vice President of Ruijin Hospital and Executive Dean of the Sino-French Joint Medical School; Liu Yingbin, Director of Pancreatic Surgery at Renji Hospital and Director of the Shanghai Cancer Institute; and Zhang Yin, Deputy Dean of the Sino-French Joint Medical School.

In the past three years, SJTUSM has established 18 new alumni associations of all levels, including 4 departmental associations, 8 provincial and municipal associations, 4 overseas associations, an alumni football club, and the 2024 Alumni Council. These initiatives have significantly enhanced alumni engagement and interaction with the school, channeling their wisdom and strength to boost the school's reputation and inject vitality into the high-quality development of its various undertakings.
